A little something extra for a better tomorrow

About Us

What's A "Lagniappe"?

Lagniappe (“lan-yap”) is an old Louisiana-French word that basically means “a little something extra.”

“Lagniappe derives from New World Spanish la ñapa, ‘the gift,’ and ultimately from Quechua yapay, ‘to give more.’ The word came into the rich Creole dialect mixture of New Orleans and acquired a French spelling. It is still used in the Gulf States, especially southern Louisiana, to denote a little bonus that a friendly shopkeeper might add to a purchase. By extension, it may mean ‘an extra or unexpected gift or benefit.’”

– American Heritage Dictionary

By providing scholarship awards, the Lagniappe Education Foundation (LEF) embodies the spirit of giving “a little something extra” to deserving students seeking higher education opportunities.

Why Lagniappe?

A little something extra goes a long way.

Our scholarship fund provides vital financial assistance to students pursuing higher education, focusing on the little things that often go unnoticed but make student life challenging—like food, supplies, and everyday necessities. By easing these burdens, we aim to lift the weight off their shoulders, fostering a sense of security and well-being. This not only helps them thrive academically but also nurtures their overall mental health, allowing them to reach their full potential with confidence and peace of mind.

Our Mission

Lagniappe Education Foundation (LEF) is a non-profit, tax-exempt educational organization that provides scholarship awards to high school seniors pursuing higher education at four-year colleges and universities.

Currently, the scholarship program is limited to high school students graduating from Edna Karr High School, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Although LEF will always allocate resources to the students at Edna Karr High School, the program will expand to other schools, other cities, and other states in the near future.
